An Afternoon of Bridal Luxury

Chicago Social Brides and  Oak Street are hosting their Third Annual Charitable Wedding Walk on Sunday, October 4th from 12:00 P.M. – 4:00 P.M.

This is truly an exciting day filled with high style and elegant wedding treats.  It is a wonderful way to enjoy a Sunday afternoon.

This outdoor wedding walk will include glimpses of couture gowns, elegant jewelry, haute cuisine and delectable cakes at more than 25 stops along the famous shopping row. Brides-to-be will receive a luxury, Juicy Couture tote to collect gifts at each location (exclusively for the bride). The walk will begin at the Private Dining Rooms of Spiaggia, level three.

The best part is that a percentage of the proceeds will benefit the American Heart Association. Not only can you spend an entire day shopping for luxurious wedding items but you can feel great about it because proceeds go to a fantastic charity (now that is what I call a great Sunday)!

To order your tickets online or get additional information just click here.  Tickets are $65 for the bride and $25 per guest.  A portion of your ticket price is tax deductible.  Online sales close October 1st so don’t wait too long to reserve your spot for this exclusive event on Chicago’s  most glamorous street!

If you want to check out last years exceptional event you can take a look here.

Be sure to let us know how the event was and have a truly fabulous day!

Oh, and if you have not already seen the current issue of CS Brides you really should!  It is a wonderful magazine … You can even view a digital version, which I think is simply fantastic!

Golden Summer

Ashley and Michael sure know how to have a good time because this was one lively party!!

I am blown away by the amazing photography taken by Dayna Schroeder.  She has such a magical eye.  It never hurts to have a wedding party willing to take some risks … These pictures are so edgy and creative!

Ashley wanted to pull together some unique color combinations including gold, yellow, orange and peach … I think everything came together beautifully!

One of my favorite things was the guest favors.  They decided to make a donation to charity instead of giving gifts to the guests, but the twist was allowing the guests to pick their charity out of the couple’s favorite three.  I am in love with this idea!!  It is a great way to honor your guests and give back to the community!

The very cool cake came from Alliance Bakery. They always do an outstanding job!

We carried the paisley motif and their monogram throughout the entire event, including the fantastic lighting done by Chicago Lighting Design.

What an honor …

I was recently contacted my Marta Segal Block, a writer for OneWed.  This is a really great wedding planning website that offers tons of tips and advice.  She has been doing a series of “top tips” articles and has interviewed several wedding vendors (including bands, officiants, travel agents and photographers) .  Marta asked me to be her Wedding Planning Expert for her piece “Top ten things to know about wedding planners”.  I was so honored to be picked for this piece and think Marta did a great job.  Check it out and let me know what you think!

Counting down the fun way!

I have seen a lot of different “count down” items for weddings, child birth, parties etc.  Most of them are electronic or on your computer and while helpful and fun to look at they are not really all that creative.

That’s why when I discovered Big Day Chains I just fell in love with them!  This is a fun (and super easy) way to count down the last thirty days before your wedding (or other special events).  They are very well priced at $14.95 each, made with Soy ink on 100% post-consumer waste recycled paper  and made right here in the USA. They even come with glue dots to transform the paper into “links”.  There is just something about physically taking a link down as you get closer that helps build anticipation.

No worries about how “crafty” you are (or are not) because they are unbelievably easy to assemble and come with extremely detailed instructions for those still doubting themselves.   And if 30 day’s is not enough for you they are more than willing to sell you additional “links”. No need to don’t limit yourselves!

One of the coolest things about the company is that five percent of all profits go to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.  I love the idea of combining something fun, creative and echo friendly with a cause.  I just get a warm fuzzy all over when I think about it.

I also think this would be a super fun gift for any children you plan to have in your wedding.  They are undoubtedly excited and perhaps a bit nervous.  This would be a great activity for them to work on and a really fun way for them to get prepared for the big day!

So go ahead, order one today and let the countdown begin!!

Appropriate Thanks

One of the things I tell all new clients is that at Greatest Expectations we have only one rule and that is “There are no rules!”  You do not have to do anything just because someone else says you should.  But I realized I should amend my statement a little bit … There are no rules, except one.  You must send a thank you note for your gifts.

There is simply no getting away from this fact.  Thank you notes are extremely important.  They not only let your guests know you received their gift but that you appreciated it (and them). Even in this tech and eco friendly world, nothing replaces the hand written thank you note!

Thank you notes should be sent for bridal shower gifts as well as wedding gifts.  If it is a “ladies only” shower then the thank you note should be from the bride to be only.  If it was a couples shower you should both sign it.  This stationery does not have to be fancy or expensive but should be a good representative of your personal style.  Have fun with them, get creative and if you are on a tighter budget, make your own!

A little insider tip for the people hosting the bridal shower is to purchase the thank you notes for the Bride to Be.  Address and stamp the envelopes with the names of everyone on the invite list, wrap them in a pretty ribbon and present them to the guest of honor at the end of the event.  Then all they need to do is write the actual thank you note and drop them in the mail.  This is one of my all time favorite things to do when hosting a special party. I use it for any type of event where gifts will be received.  It really shows your attention to detail and thoughtfulness! I have also been on the receiving end of this fantastic idea and I can say from personal experience, it really is wonderful.

While your guests have up to a year to send you a wedding gift, you do not have that long to send out a thank you note.  Many people like to send wedding gifts as soon as an invitation is received.  We think this is a wonderful thing to do, in fact, all gifts should be mailed and not ever brought directly to the wedding (trust us on this, it is simply good etiquette).  One thing to note is that it is not ok to send out a thank you note with your married name (or initials) until after the actual marriage has occurred!!

What we suggest is one of two things. Send a thank you note on non-personalized stationery as soon as the gift is received or wait until just after the wedding and use those beautiful new monogrammed note cards (it really is ok to wait!).  If you decide to wait until after the wedding (which is my personal preference) one tip for making it easy instead of overwhelming is to write, address and stamp the thank you notes as soon as the gifts are received.  Keep them all together and mail them out the day after your wedding.  If you are working with Greatest Expectations we are happy to mail them for you so you can focus on your honeymoon! Your guests will be pleasantly surprised and duly impressed to get their thank you note while you are away on your honeymoon!

No, you do not have to stay up the night of your wedding and write thank you notes! You have one month after your wedding to mail them for gifts received on the big day and two weeks for anything received afterwards.

When it comes to actually writing the thank you note you do not have to get long winded. Simply thank them for the gift (be specific about it i.e. “We loved the waffle maker and cannot wait for our first free Sunday to test it out”).  If it was a cash gift you should not only thank them for the gift but let them know how you plan on using it (i.e. “Thank you so much for the generous gift. We plan to get the last of our crystal with the money and will think of you every time we use it!”).  They should be signed by both the bride and groom.

What you spend on your thank you notes is completely up to you.  Check out your local stationery shop or shop online.  Both of these can be done well before the wedding takes place so you are completely prepared.  Greatest Expectations has a wonderful line of personalized stationary so you can always go through us to get something that is just perfect (and affordable)!

You can go super traditional and get something monogrammed like this embossed fold over note card from Crane and Co.

White Triple Panelled Folder with Blind Embossed Monogram

Or a more contemporary look on a flat card, like this one from Wedding Paper Diva’s.

Floral Flurry Signature White Thank You Cards

I love this non personalized note card from delphine. They are embossed on 30% post consumer paper and have a soy based ink – totally eco friendly!

L502B-Rococo_Blue-Product.jpg

Oh and don’t forget the return address! On most wedding invitations you will have the return address printed directly on the envelope.  Unless you are having custom stationery made, you will need to come up with another solution for the return address.  I suggest getting a self-inking stamp.  They really make the job easier and can be customized in just about any way you can imagine, including different colors. Oh, and they can be used for a very long time – easy and eco friendly!

I love these round stamps from Custom Art Stamps.  There are so many design options you can really have fun picking out the perfect one for you!

Or you can stick with the traditional and get something like this from Emily Friday’s Calligraphy. (this shop has some really great items, you should totally check it out!).

No matter what your “note card style” is … pick something representative of you, your tastes and your wedding.  Have fun, buy extras (you can always use them for years to come) and thank away!!

Red Hot Wedding!

Here at Greatest Expectations, we love what we do.  Combined we have been planning special events for more than 15 years, but our hearts belong to weddings.  We love the romance, the excitement, the emotion … My heart melts when the new couple walks back down the aisle and I continue to cry at every Father of The Bride Toast. Truly, we love every event we do … But it is rare that we have a chance to really get creative and step completely outside of the box on a wedding.  That is why we so enjoyed working with Christina and Cary on their unbelievable “Red Hot Wedding” this past April at the Chicago Illuminating Company (one of my all time favorite venues).

Christina has amazing taste (well, she did hire us right – the proof is in the pudding).  She came to us with so many beautiful and exciting ideas for a contemporary yet completely elegant wedding.  We worked together to create something that no one else has ever done from a design perspective.  The team of vendors we had just rocked and working together, we just really hit this one out of the park.

Normally I write the post about the event and then show you pictures at the end but I just don’t think it does the event, or the images justice this time.  So I would like to include pictures as I post to really give you an idea of what it was like at this event!  I will also note that it is not necessarily in “event order”.

All of the images are from the beautiful and talented Amanda Hein Photography.   I really love working with Amanda.  It is super fun to watch her work as she is constantly scanning the room for the perfect shot, creative angle and unique look.  I highly encourage you all to check out her website (and blog, where Greatest Expectation got their share of love when she posted this same wedding) to see more of her work!

One of the things I loved most about this event was the color palette.  Interestingly enough, Christina and Cary first wanted an icy blue with red accents. As we progressed through the planning process she realized those colors just were not working for her (have you ever tried to find blue flowers, there are not many to choose from and you cannot get too picky about the exact shade of blue).  So a little over half way though the planning process she came to me with the idea of doing eggplant and candy apple red … I will admit to being a tad bit skeptical at first but once you see these colors together there is no denying the power and beauty they invoke.  We started with an amazing monogram (designed by the bride herself, she really is quite the talent!).

Monogram

We decided to use stark white in the cocktail hour with accents of the eggplant and red in the floral and with the votive candle holders.  It was such a beautiful and really fun cocktail area.  We had white spandex on all of the high boys and two beautiful white seating vignette’s. The Pièce de résistance was the Glow Bar from Ivan Carlson (they did the white furniture as well). And one of my favorite things was the “place card wall”.  Think french message board gone contemporary!  This was a really, really large piece – over four feet tall and nearly four feet wide!  Truly, truly gorgeous!

Because red had always been part of the design we were able to keep several of the design ideas we already had planned, including the candy apple red dance floor!  Frost Lighting worked with us to not only create the perfect lighting effects but to also create the super cool dance floor.  Frost also provided the red seating arrangements that helped the dance floor area feel like a night club.

CC0970

CC0825

Because the contemporary shapes and architecture were such an active part of the design plan, we used a beautiful combination of squares and circles in almost every element.  The centerpieces done by Fleur, Inc were a combination of the most amazing red pave floral chandeliers dripping with crystals and red pave spheres in square glass containers. BBJ linen provided the rich eggplant lamour linens and the color combination was truly eye popping! We topped the tables off with fantastic red water and wine goblets and square bread plates. And guests were seated on Ice Versailles Chairs (all from Halls Rental) which are a clear lucite where you can see the silver tubing.  It was such a fantastic way to marry the tradition of the Versailles Chair with the edgy contemporary design of the lucite.

While all the guest tables were round, the head table was a square.  All of the floral was bright red, the only exception were the Bride’s flowers which were mostly white with a touch of blue (my favorite way to get your “something blue”).  We used her flowers as the centerpiece for the head table. That is not only a great design element but a wonderful way to save a little money.

The cake was a simply divine creation by Amy Beck Cake Design. Amy really out did herself with this square butter cream structure.  There were beautiful hand made red sugar flowers that I know took Amy and her entire staff weeks to make!  It tasted amazing (as Amy’s cakes always do) and really was a sight to see!

CC0820

The catering for this event was done by Berghoff Catering Group.  I am here to tell you all, it was amazing!  Obviously the food tasted outstanding but what was even more exciting than that was the design of the food.  I really wish I had some pictures to show you the dinner, especially the salad course which was a Mango and Strawberry Tower with mangos, strawberries, goat cheese and arugula accompanied by raspberry vinaigrette with a fresh honeycomb.  Is your mouth watering yet?

Berghoff also provided beautiful Blood Orange Martini’s as the speciality cocktail (complete with red star fruit!) and a French Fry Bar (white and sweet potatoes with all imaginable toppings) to finish the evening out.  Trust me, if you hear about an event that Berghoff is catering make sure you are on the guest list!

CC0721

CC1053

Of course as with all weddings, the most important part is the couple and the actual wedding. Here are a few of my favorite shots from the first part of the day.  The most “unlucky” part of the entire day was when the Michigan Avenue Bridge got stuck half way up.  We were taking “first glance” pictures on the stair case at Michigan and the River and it obviously caused a serious traffic jam. No one could get across the bridge and they literally closed down Michigan Ave for four blocks!  But honestly, how else could we ever have gotten a shot like this (which I adore).

The beautiful bride!

The ceremony was held at St. Vincent de Paul Parish in Lincoln Park.  I think this series of images is just fantastic!

One of the perks of having a reception in an industrial area is getting shots like these …

CC0658

And I think this photograph may actually be my all time favorite image.  Seriously, my favorite image ever in over 13 years of planning special events and weddings.  I am not exactly sure why but it totally evokes something magical, romantic and completely beautiful in me.

CC0691

Wow – I know that was a long post.  I hope you enjoyed it.  As you can tell I enjoyed every aspect of planning this event.  It was a complete pleasure working with Christina and Cary. They are wonderful people and I wish them the most beautiful, love filled future possible!

A Round Of Applause

As I was going through some files in my office this week I discovered a pile of really lovely thank you notes I have received from clients and their parents.  I thought it would be nice to share some of them with you (none of these are featured on my website at this time).  It just gives me the nicest warm fuzzy to read these and I hope you enjoy them as well.

Dear Heather,

Thank you so much for all of your great ideas and insight. Thanks for making this planning process go as smoothly as possible and for shielding me from any “unpleasantness” that may have occurred.  I had a blast with you and will definitely recommed you to friends!  You’re the best!

Love, Christina

Dear Heather,

Thank you so much for taking care of George and me.  We could not have asked for a better event.  It’s too bad I can’t have a few weddings because you are the best!

Dear Heather,

Thank you so very much for all your hard work, words of reassurance, encouragement and guidance.  We most certainly would never have survived these past months without your expertise and energy. I feel like we have become family and hope to stay in touch.

Again all our thanks,
